Today we visited Gamla and Hippos, two possible candidates for the city Jesus was referring to in His “city upon a hill” sermon. They both can be seen from the Mount of Beatitudes. The name Gamla comes from the Hebrew word for camel, which is fitting because it resembles the hump of a camel. This was a rebellious, zealous city during the time that the Romans took over the Holy Land (around 70 AD) but eventually it was taken over (as shown by the breach in the wall). Some Jews committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs—they preferred that fate rather than submission to the Romans. We had some fun with an inflatable turkey that Hailey Darger brought along—we obviously had to do something clever to celebrate Thanksgiving!
